An Ode to Karaikudi curated by Madurai-based home chef Athira Lakshmi @kumarathilakshmi is going to be playing out at The Feast, the lobby level all-day dinery @sheratonhyderabad from today ie March 18th Wednesday until March 22nd Sunday and is a must-try for those with discerning palates, as Karaikudi cuisine uses local ingredients which are not mainstream or widely prevalent. Karaikudi the largest city in Chettinadu region is considered its culinary hub and for all the right reasons if this food pop up is anything to go by. From the delicious chilled Panakaram (jaggery, lime juice, seasoned with ginger & cardamom) to the flavorful Kola Urandai (crisply-fried minced meatballs ), the Kozhi (chicken) Sukka and the delightfully tangy Nethili Meen (anchovies) Kolambu it was a palate-pleasing experience, one dish after the other. Standouts for everyone was the Mullu Murungai Adai with podi which apparently is a signature dish of the Saurashtrian community in Madurai. It uses leaves of the Indian coral tree which resembles ths drumstick tree) and is ground with lentils and rice to make deep fried puris, with a distinct taste. The Sundakkai (dried Turkey berries) Thuvaiyal was also much-appreciated with its slightly sour, sweet taste with a slightly bitter aftertaste. The Vegetable “Fish” fry was also a pleasant surprise with its resemblance to the Gujarati Patra but instead of having a besan filling had a mixed-lentil filling and was the better for it ! The Kavuni Arisi Payasam cooked with their indigenous premium black rice (without milk) spelt a deliciously apt end to a very fulfilling and happy meal. This was a chefs table I would advise to not miss for its sheer uniqueness! 🩷
