This pre-Women’s Day celebration at Swadesh, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad struck a different note, no cliches. Swadesh, founded by Ms Neeta Ambani, is a treasure trove of the best of Indian handicraft traditions (I have always thought of it as the Bada Baap of Delhi Cottage Industries Emporium 😅) at the Hyderabad store is no different, iykyk! Three renowned craftswomen from different zones , Madhubani artist Dr Shanti Devi (Padma Shri winner) , Gond artist Janani Shyam and proponent of Jaipur’s famed blue pottery Leela Bordia (who has also authored a coffee table book on blue pottery with painstaking research) shared their journey with an audience of women from all walks of life. Steering ths discussion ably and with an earthy sense of humour was acclaimed art curator Dr Alka Pande, herself an authority on Indian art & aesthetics . Right from Shanti Devi’s spirited account of her journey from Ghoonghat to overseas demos and shows of her work to Ms Janani narrating the wonderful fables of folk art to Ms Bordia describing how she made the move from being the spouse of a busy builder to promoting pottery among the poor artisans whom she woupd observe, there was so much unravelling of wisdom and empowerment in a single day. Young and extremely talented sitar artist Shruti provided a very musical background score. And last but not the least Kavitha Mantha of Sage Farm Cafe kept us very nourished & fulfilled with her varied and delightful offerings ranging from Mary’Bucha (kombucha with Bloody Mary tones, Zunka Bhakri bites (thst Maharashtrian ethnic spl) to Black Rice Pudding. Finally, It was an enriching day in every aspect & kudos to @swadesh_online to have curated such a vibrant session on the eve of Women’s Day 2026. Thsnk you @priyarajivwellnessmentor for being such a warm hostess as always! 💜🤗
