
Simply South and cultural events are a match made in heaven, as a recent literary event proved to be. Paandaan authored by writer/storyteller Mujtaba Khan, was the centre of discussion by the very articulate and witty Mujtaba, along with culinary expert and secretary of cultural forum Dilnaz Baig, young Urdu poet Riyasat Ali Asrar, and our own favourite chef Chalapathi Rao. Paandaan written in Hindi is a tribute to the women in Mujtaba’s family (mother, grandmothers )who held the fort and nurtured generations, with fortitude and a quiet strength despite a prevalent patriarchal mindset and changing economic conditions. The session was made both engrossing and interactive by the speakers where Dinaz Baig shared some amusing anecdotes about the esteemed position which the Paandaan (which used to be sometimes crafted in gold & silver) held in Hyderabadi households. Riyaz elaborated further on how the Paandaan would be brought out to indicate to the guests that ths hosts were done with their hosting dinner. Chef Challu spoke on rare paan recipes including a paan rasam (?!) which I do hope he will soon feature at @simplysouth_hyd . 😁 Post the session, it was time for Simply South’s signature filter coffee and snacks like Mirchi Bhajji, Mokka Jonna Garelu, Sabudana Vada and the showstopper was some hot and absolutely lip smacking Sheer Qorma.
