If Hyderabad should thank anyone for popularizing Japanese cuisine on a casual dining, standalone mode (in place of the largely price-inaccessible five star hotel types) taking the huge risk, that too, in a biryani-obsessed metro), it is foodpreneur couple Nishita and Sandeep Balasubramanian who started Hashi as the first home-grown standalone (non-star hotel category) Japanese restaurant almost a decade ago. Now they are back with this light and easy (both on the eye and the palate) fun-filled dinery called Doki Doki (heartbeats in Japanese and don’t they sound like our own Dhak Dhak? ) in the same premises as YelloLife on Road no 45, Jubilee Hills. The food is Japanese/Asian with a contemporary, fun tweak. There are the classics too like sushi, sashimi and ramen bowls. There are ‘sober’ cocktails with more spirit, may we say than their alcoholic cousins and I completely recommend Monkey Business , a “cashew-spiked sober rum cocktail with a banana-soy alchemy and a kimchi kiss on the rim.” Coffee with Benefits , a coffee martini with “no regrets”! Standouts on the food menu for me were the Burrata Snow, creamy burrata on a bed of rocket, topped with fluffy tomato snow. The burrata getting ‘gooey’ier with the tomato snow (textured almost like our ice golas ) melting lends it a delightful cold, soupy, taste. Couture salad read the menu description and we couldn’t agree more about this cleverly crafted dish! Also delightful was the Midori Frost, paper thin green apple slices drizzled in citrus and topped with a zesty lemon sorbet. It can make for a wonderful mid-meal palate cleanser or a dessert. The smoking Malay street Noods (an adorable abbreviation for noodles) was a good option for those who like their noodles and my Miso ramen bowl (with prawns, sprouts, plenty of veggies and a boiled egg) was the stuff hale and hearty and nourishing soul food is made of. You will love the well-lit, greenery-facing ambience of @dokiidokii.in and the sight of the animation on the walls of the blue cat chasing a red heart and getting it in the end, will put a smile on your lips and in your heart. ❤️ Go @dokiidokii.in , we say!
