I had no idea Robi Thakur had a profound connection with Dehradun, Uttarakhand!!! Yes, you heard it right. On this Rabindra Jayanti, as Rabindranath Thakur’s 165th birth anniversary is commemorated, I wonder how the Himalayas have a way of slowing the mind, softening the heart to people. And for Kobiguru, Uttarakhand seems to have offered that still moment where his verses could breathe before becoming immortal. Dehradun enters this story through Rabindranath Thakur’s eldest son, Rathindranath Thakur, who spent his last eight years here from 1953, in Rajpur, at a home named Mitali. That isn't just any ordinary residence, but as a space that carried the spirit of Shantiniketan into the Doon Valley. There is something beautiful about that how one generation’s cultural world found a resting place in another landscape, and how Dehradun became part of the Tagore family’s story. For me, that is the real charm of Dehradun too. It doesn’t merely stay on the map; it stays in memory. It welcomes people, shelters them, and sometimes becomes the place where their inner life finally finds a softer rhythm. In Ramgarh, he stayed in 1903 with his daughter Renuka, and the house there is remembered as the place where he wrote parts of Gitanjali, Sejuti, Akaash Pradeep, Nobojaatok and Bishwa Porichoy, and work that later carried his voice across the world and shaped our lives. Even today, that the hike to Tagore Top is cherished by tourists, and @uttarakhand_tourismofficial also keeps alive Tagore’s memory in Almora through Tagore Bhavan.
