Having born on the day of Kali pujo, Kalighat has never felt like just a temple to me. It feels like a part of my life, belief, and living tradition since I was a toddler. I went there with my mom yesterday, and the visit was one of the very reasons I keep coming back to Kolkata twice/thrice a year. Being one of the most revered Shaktipeeth since 15th century, Kalighat's very mention can be found in Ketakadas Khemananda's Manasha Bhasan. Shaktipeeth or Satipeeth are those places where Devi Sati's body parts fell one by one after Vishnu Dev's sudarshan chakra created 51 vigraha of hers. There's a pond inside the Kalighat mandir premises called Kundapukur. This is exactly where the vigraha of Maa fell into. We witnessed the divinity of Bali Ghar where sacrificial rituals were once performed, Mahadev Mandir, Foni Manasa Gach and the 200 year old Naatmandir constructed by the Sabarna Roy Choudhury. Every part of Kalighat carries a story. What I valued most was the way the mandir committee helped us get through the crowd. We got time with Maa, the puja was done peacefully and meticulously. The entire experience felt deeply personal. Trends come and go but Kalighat was, is and will be the spotlight for its heritage, history, and an emblem of Sanatan Dharma. I see so many videos, pictures, sages chanting hymns at Kalighat on Instagram everyday in my Dehradun home. But to be able to visit this holy place of Maa after more than a decade now, brings me so much peace and happiness.
