One of the underrated but most beautiful stretches of Himachal Pradesh is Kinnaur Valley. From Shimla we travelled up about 150 km to Sarahan, a small village at 7500 ft known for the Bhima Kali temple. On the way we passed through Kufri, Narkanda, Rampur and countless large apple orchards, with the Sutlej giving us company for quite a while. The apple trees were covered by nets to protect them, and it gives a very different look to the Orchard. We also saw the statue of Samuel Stokes, an American who introduced apple cultivation to this region, and later changed his name to Satyanand Stokes and participated in the freedom movement. Bhima Kali was the reigning deity of the erstwhile Bushahr kingdom. The temple has a distinct Tibetan structure. One of the most recent kings of this kingdom was Raja Vir Bhadra Singh, an erstwhile Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The palace of the king is close to the temple and definitely worth a look. But what enchanted us was the serene Sarahan. It is absolutely green with the snow peaks of Kinnar-Kailash range dotting the horizon. Our hotel has a breathtaking view of the mountains, but a long morning walk got us to explore the beauty of the hamlet.
