Every summer, households across the Telugu states come alive with the cherished tradition of preparing Avakaya, the iconic raw mango pickle that has been a part of family kitchens for generations. Made using freshly cut raw mangoes, mustard powder, spices, salt, and gingelly oil, the pickle is traditionally mixed by hand and stored in ceramic jars to mature into the bold, tangy flavour that Telugu homes love. I recently witnessed this beautiful tradition at Adi, The Leela Hyderabad, where the restaurant's chefs hosted an authentic Avakaya mixing ceremony. A small group of enthusiasts joined in, happily rolling up their sleeves to participate in this time-honoured ritual. The experience was followed by a delightful spread of traditional snacks including Sarvapindi, Mirchi Bajji, and Laddoo, accompanied by steaming cups of masala chai and filter coffee—the perfect ending to a nostalgic afternoon celebrating Telugu culinary heritage. It's wonderful to see hotels and restaurants preserving and showcasing traditions that are so deeply woven into our culture. 📍 Adi, The Leela Hyderabad [Aavakaya, Mango Pickle, Mango and Garlic Pickle, Pickle Mixing, Hyderabad] #mango #avakaya #mangopickle #hyderabad #garlic pickle
