Ah, Gurgaon. The land of glass towers, perpetually gridlocked traffic, and an insatiable appetite for the new. Every few months, a spot opens up that promises to be the place, the crucible where the city's restless energy, its yearning for the global, and its rather hefty disposable income meet. Many make noise; few deliver. I recently found myself at One8 Commune in the new M3M IFC, and I must say, it's one of the few that steps up to the plate—quite literally. Kohli's Commune: More Than Just a Cricketer's Fancy Let's dispense with the obvious first: the name. One8 Commune is helmed by none other than Virat Kohli, a man whose dedication to fitness is as legendary as his cover drive. Now, you might expect a spot bearing his imprimatur to be some austere, protein-shake-and-quinoa temple. You'd be wrong. This venture—co-owned with Ankit Tayal, Vartik Tihara, and Anshul Goel—is a shrewd, sophisticated bet on what Gurgaon wants. It aims to be an all-day institution, not just a fleeting weekend fad. It's that rare beast that attempts to nail the daytime rendezvous (think serious coffee and power lunches) and the gourmet dining/lively nightlife arc. Crucially, it manages this balance with an architectural thoughtfulness you seldom see in the city's more chaotic new openings. The space is cleverly split over two levels, giving it a versatility that allows for different moods without the whole place feeling schizophrenic. It’s modern, it's vibrant, and it certainly understands the assignment of being the premier destination for a city always chasing the next high-gloss experience. The Spirit of the Bar: Wild Saffron and Sunshine Any worthwhile establishment must be judged first on its libations. I settled in and began with the Wild Saffron Tea cocktail. A rather complex concoction, I must admit: sous vide Saffron vodka, Chamomile infused Gin, Passion fruit, Orange, Lime Saline, and a slick of Egg white. It's a bold mix, flirting dangerously with being overly sweet, but the subtle, earthy bitterness of the saffron and chamomile pulls it back from the brink, giving it a surprising depth. It’s not just a sugar rush; it’s a drink with a pedigree.
