The Novotel, a Culinary Compass, and the Usual Suspects One finds oneself, as one often does, navigating the labyrinthine bylanes of Delhi's ever-expanding concrete jungle. This time, the compass pointed towards something gleaming and new – the Novotel New Delhi City Center. Now, Novotels, by their very nature, tend to be… well, Novotels. Efficient, functional, a comfortable predictability that often borders on the uninspired. But then, every so often, a property manages to surprise. And surprise, I must confess, the Novotel New Delhi City Center did, not least with its culinary offerings. My recent sojourn there, which encompassed the full gastronomic spectrum from the bleary-eyed promise of breakfast to the more refined pursuits of lunch and the leisurely indulgence of dinner, proved to be a rather pleasant deviation from the expected. The Food Exchange: A Global Bazaar (Mostly) Done Right The epicentre of this culinary exploration was, of course, the Food Exchange. The name itself, one notes with a wry smile, conjures images of bustling marketplaces and an almost mercantile approach to sustenance. And in a sense, it lives up to it. This is their all-day dining offering, and it boasts, as all such establishments must, a "diverse selection of Indian and international cuisines." Now, "diverse selection" can often be code for "a bit of everything, none of it truly excelling." Yet, the Food Exchange managed to steer clear of that particular culinary purgatory. The Indian offerings, while not pushing the boundaries of haute cuisine, were commendably executed. The usual suspects – your curries, your breads, the ubiquitous dal – all held their own with a comforting authenticity. But it was the international spread that truly piqued my interest. No, you won't find Michelin-starred aspirations here, nor should you expect them. This is, after all, a Novotel. But what you will find is a well-curated selection that caters to a global palate without descending into bland generalities. From a rather respectable pasta station to some surprisingly nuanced Asian stir-fries, the kitchen demonstrated a clear understanding of balance and flavour.
