A Home, Reimagined: HomeStop Returns to Saket I have long believed that the story of modern India is best told not through its monuments but through its malls. Which is why, when I heard that HomeStop was relaunching its store at Nexus Select Citywalk in Saket, I made sure I was there — not merely as an observer, but as someone who has spent a good part of his life believing that the objects we choose to live with say a great deal about who we are. There is a phrase I keep returning to whenever I think about the business of home decor: every home tells a story. It sounds, I admit, like the sort of line a marketing brochure might print in italics. But spend enough time walking through a well-curated home store — the linens folded just so, the dinnerware arranged like a still life, the lighting doing its quiet, flattering work — and you begin to understand that the sentiment, however overused, happens to be true. The right cushion, the right coffee mug, the right chair by the window: these are not decorations so much as the punctuation marks of a life. They help bring the story to life. The occasion for my visit was a proper one. HomeStop's grand relaunch at Citywalk was inaugurated by none other than Padma Shri Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, a man who needs no introduction to anyone who has ever owned a television in this country. There was a certain symmetry to having a chef cut the ribbon on a home store — after all, no room in a house tells a more honest story about a family than the kitchen, and Chef Kapoor has spent a career convincing Indians that the kitchen deserves as much attention as the drawing room. It was in that spirit that the store's Wonderchef range caught my eye almost immediately. I have, over the years, watched the Indian kitchen go through several quiet revolutions — from the gas stove to the microwave to, now, this new generation of appliances that promise to do the work of a small brigade of cooks. Wonderchef's bestsellers were all on display: the Chef Magic, which seemed to want to be everything at once; the Chai Magic, which I suspect will do more for domestic harmony than any home appliance since the pressure cooker.
