The Secret Bungalow: An Evening at House 921 I have long believed that the best restaurants in Delhi are the ones that don't advertise themselves. They don't need to. They exist for people who already know, and for the lucky few who stumble upon them through a friend's recommendation, whispered over a drink at some other party. House 921 belongs firmly to this tradition. Tucked inside a heritage bungalow in Chanakyapuri — that quietest and most diplomatic corner of Delhi, where embassies sit behind high walls and nobody is in a hurry — House 921 announces itself with nothing. No signage, no neon, no valet standing under a spotlight. You could drive past it a dozen times and never know it was there. Which, of course, is exactly the point. This is the work of the team behind Perch and Hoots, two of the more quietly confident additions to Delhi's dining landscape in recent years, and it shows. They understand something that a lot of new restaurants don't: that "exclusive" isn't a marketing word, it's a feeling. And the feeling at House 921 is unmistakably old-money — not in the tired, chandeliers-and-velvet sense, but in the sense of a house that has always been comfortable in its own skin and never needed to prove anything to anyone. The Setting Inside, the bungalow has been done up with the kind of restraint that costs more than excess. Cozy indoor rooms give the sense of eating in someone's rather well-appointed home, while the garden — and this is where I'd steer you, if the weather permits — opens up for dining under the stars. There is a hidden cocktail bar as well, the sort of thing you find rather than are shown to, and it sets the tone for an evening that feels discovered rather than delivered. The Food I was looked after by Chef Sankalp, who has clearly been trained in the old school of hospitality — attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without lecturing. He began my evening with charcoal grilled king prawns, smoky and just charred enough at the edges, which is always a promising sign from a kitchen: get the grill right, and you've usually got the rest right too.
