Andrea's Eatery: A Global Passport on a Plate There's something to be said about restaurants that don't try too hard to be something they're not. Andrea's Eatery, which has just opened on the third floor of Ambience Mall in Gurugram, is refreshingly upfront about its ambitions: it wants to take you on a culinary world tour without the jet lag. Now, I'll admit I was skeptical. The phrase "global cuisine" often translates to "mediocre everything," a jack-of-all-trades approach that delivers consistent disappointment across continents. But Andrea's—named after its Italian-Indian founder who spent part of his formative years in Thailand—is an altogether different proposition. The Andrea Philosophy The story, as these things go, is rather charming. Andrea caught the travel bug early and decided that if he was going to see the world, he might as well eat it too. For the past two decades (the first restaurant opened 20 years ago), Andrea and his team have been globe-trotting culinary pirates, plundering the best dishes from various cuisines and bringing them back to perfect in their kitchens. What saves this from being cultural appropriation or fusion confusion is their stated philosophy: use the freshest ingredients, cook with honesty, and respect your customers. It sounds simple because it is. But as anyone who has eaten at enough restaurants knows, these basic principles are honored more in the breach than the observance. What Worked I started, as one should in any establishment with pretensions to global cuisine, with a Vietnamese Coffee. If you've never had one, you've been missing out on one of life's great pleasures—strong coffee dripped through a metal filter, sweetened with condensed milk. Andrea's version was properly made, none of that instant nonsense, and it set the right tone. The fresh cold-pressed juices (I tried both the orange and pineapple) were exactly that—fresh and cold-pressed. No added sugar, no funny business. Again, simple things done right. In a city increasingly dominated by restaurants that prioritize Instagram over flavor, Andrea's commitment to quality ingredients and honest cooking feels almost revolutionary.
