Chasing the Sun at LUMAA Delhi, one must concede, has always been a city of fickle culinary tastes. For a while, it was all about the Punjabi classics—butter chicken and dal makhni elevated to an art form, then came the Asian wave, followed by the deluge of "Modern Indian" that now seems to occupy every second menu. So, when I heard of a new venture promising the Mediterranean in a mouthful—from Greece to Lebanon, and even a dalliance with sushi—my eyebrows involuntarily rose. Frankly, one expects a Mediterranean spread in Delhi to be either a dreary selection of hummus and tired pita, or an overly ambitious mess. But I've just come back from LUMAA, and I must say, the cynic in me has been politely, but firmly, silenced. The premise itself is compelling: not merely one country, but a journey across the great sea, where flavours cross borders and cultures meet at the table. The air itself, they claim, is an 'atmosphere that moves with you, from golden hour to moonlight.' A bit of PR fluff, perhaps, but there is an undeniable glow to the place that transcends the usual ambient lighting trickery. It's a space that actually manages to feel as effortless and sunlit as a taverna on the Adriatic coast. The Liquid Sunshine: Cocktails with Intent A restaurant lives or dies not just by its food, but by its bar. LUMAA's cocktails are not the usual sugary nonsense we've become accustomed to. They have intent. Take the Adriatic Rouge. Vodka, yes, but its true spirit is in the beetroot juice and caperberry. Earthy, with a powerful, almost savage beet-driven colour that belies the stone-fruit sweetness of the peach purée. This is a complex drink, managing to be bold, sweet, and savory all at once. It has the punch of a proper Croatian aperitivo. Then there was the Marrakech Glow, or the Mango Picante. I am always suspicious of mango in cocktails—it so often descends into sticky-sweet syrup—but here, the ripe purée was expertly countered by a trinity of fire: tequila, coriander, and jalapeño. It was golden desert sweetness with a very proper, fiery warmth. A cocktail that knows its own mind. LUMAA has succeeded where many have failed.
