What A Legacy this towering personality has handed down to Indian cinema! Ankur, Nishant, Manthan, Bhumika, Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda, Well done ABBA, each one a gem, showing us a mirror to the real India. I can only count myself as super privileged to have spent some cherished time in Shyam Benegal’s company at the Kolkata Literary festival when he was invited to speak at the launch of hubby’s biopic of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: Living Dangerously. As our luck would have it , he happened to be in Hyderabad and so we were boarded on the same flight. At the Shamshabad airport lounge itself we took an instant liking to this man, who spoke with such clarity on every possible topic, politics, cricket and of course cinema. In the couple of days to come we got to discover his love for food (and drink) too! I remember he was mighty disappointed to find basa fish at lunch at the star hotel where we were put up. He summoned the restaurant manager and asked him how could he serve something as ubiquitous as basa in a fish-proud city like Kolkata? The chef was produced and in minutes, steaming hot Bhekti fish curry was produced! He regaled us with vignettes of Bollywood in the days to come over pegs of whisky, and he was a bit disappointed to find Kingshuk not drinking. Strangely, I can only thank the late director Shyam Babu as he was fondly known, for getting the hubby into using the bipap machine for his sleep apnea/breathing issues. When I volunteered at the airport to hold one of his hand bags, (he was 83 then, a little older than my father) he replied, no thanks, this is my sleeping partner. Intrigued? He continued, this is my bipap machine, it helps me sleep better. Bas! Chance pe Dance was my golden opportunity. I fed him in (unabashedly like a harangued wife!) about how Kingshuk despite medical advice was not using the device.but that’s very foolish, Kingshuk he thundered. From my own experience I can tell you that it will improve your work and sleep productivity. And just like that Kingshuk got initiated into using bipap support at night. I am sure ShyamBabu is busy with his brilliant ideas of cinema-making up there in the heavens. 🙏🏻💜
