I went looking for wine in Armenia, found eternity instead! ❤️ 👉🏻 Eight metres beneath the vineyards of Sasunik, inside Armenia Wine Company’s Wine History Museum (first of its kind in Armenia), I descended into volcanic rock and 8,000 years of human history. The cave-like chambers aren’t theatre; the natural climate keeps both artefacts and wine in perfect slumber. 👉🏻 My first step nearly stopped me cold: a glimpse of a charred grape seed pic from Aratashen, 4100 BC. Small enough to overlook. Old enough to rewrite history. Nearby, a burial jar from the 1st century BC reminded me that the Armenians buried their dead with wine — a final companion for the journey beyond. 👉🏻 A silver goblet from Karashamb (2000 BC), a monastery khachkar where paradise is carved as a vineyard, medieval manuscripts prescribing wine as medicine — each artefact echoes the same truth: wine here was never just a drink. It was ritual, medicine, trade, and faith. 👉🏻 Then came the light. Back upstairs, we tasted Areni — an indigenous grape from the very caves where archaeologists found the world’s oldest winery (4100 BC!) — alongside the Yerevan 782 BC sparkling brut, crisp and quietly triumphant. And dinner? A feast of Armenian cheeses, beef loin with arishta (their beloved handmade pasta), tender chicken with peppers, and more wine flowing generously. My guide Siran said it best as she poured: “Armenia is about continuity — a thread that connects the first fermented grape to the glass in your hand.” I’ve travelled wine routes in France and Spain. Armenia felt different — deeper, older, more soulful. Go. Descend. Taste history. 🍷 #armeniawinecompany #armeniawinemuseum #travelwithkrazybutterfly
