Bangkok doesn’t ease you in. It throws heat, smoke, noise and flavour straight at your face—and somehow, you thank it. My first meal was polite: coconut rice pancakes, grilled pork skewers, soft dumplings. My last meal involved a scorpion on a stick. That arc says everything about this city. 👉🏻 Chinatown was where things got real. Bamboo worms that tasted like nutty chips. Crickets for 10 baht. Grasshoppers with too many legs but not enough fear. Then the scorpion—cracked shell, smoky, soy bitterness, oddly…good. The vendor told me it pairs well with beer. He was not wrong. 👉🏻 But Bangkok isn’t just about shock value. It’s also mango sticky rice after you’ve survived the insects. Khao kha moo soaking in dark soy gravy. Soy sauce ice cream that made no sense but somehow worked. Steamed bao buns for 15 baht that beat most café desserts back home. 👉🏻 What I loved most was the contrast: One moment I was eating crocodile skewers in a luxury mall. Next, I was on a plastic stool at a 40-year-old pad thai stall where the only review that matters is the cook watching your first bite. Bangkok’s food culture lives in that tension between chaos and craft, tradition and reinvention. It doesn’t care about your comfort zone.
