My recent visit to Valencia was more than just another assignment—it was a step back into history, into the very heart of a game that has shaped minds and challenged generations. I was there to witness the 550th anniversary celebration of modern chess, an event that brought together scholars, players, and enthusiasts from around the world. 👉🏻 It’s astonishing to think that while over 20 million people play chess today, very few know that it was in Valencia that the game took the shape we now recognize—where the queen, the most powerful piece on the board, was born. Before that, she moved only a square at a time. But in Valencia, she was transformed, suddenly able to glide across the board with force and grace. That single shift gave rise to the faster, more aggressive form of chess we now cherish. 👉🏻 And in the midst of all this, I had the incredible opportunity to meet and interview Vishwanathan Anand—India’s legendary grandmaster and a five-time world champion—for Hindustan Times. Speaking with Anand in a city so foundational to the history of chess was surreal. 👉🏻 Being in Valencia reminded me that sometimes, the most profound revolutions are subtle. A single piece—given new life—changed the game forever.
