There couldn’t have been a more auspicious day to arrive in Pondicherry than The Mother’s (Mirra Alfassa) birthday—the force behind the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the visionary of Auroville. 👉🏻 It was Day 4 of my travels across Tamil Nadu. I drove down from Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry about 100 km, a little over two hours on the East Coast Road with the sea flashing in and out beside me. 👉🏻 Though Pondicherry is a Union Territory, stepping in felt like crossing into a layered consciousness. I eased into it slowly, beginning with breakfast and later lunch at Palais de Mahe by CGH Earth—there couldn’t be a finer introduction to Franco-Tamil cuisine here. 👉🏻 The highlight, without question, was a heritage walk with @sunilvarghese1 a man with a divine aura, who has walked some of India’s most celebrated writers and philosophers through these streets, and I felt deeply honoured to listen. Through him, Pondicherry unfolded—from Roman trade links to the French arrival in 1674, their rule until 1954 (formally ratified in 1962), and the quiet exile of Sri Aurobindo that transformed this town into a spiritual epicentre. French-era villas, mustard walls, bougainvillaea-laced balconies—history stands intact, breathing.
