A winding climb past Pollachi or Madurai into the Western Ghats, through Manjalparappu village and into a landscape of pine, coffee, pepper, and eucalyptus, brings you to a 1,200-metre-high ridge where silence feels almost physical. 👉🏻 Two whitewashed bungalows set across a ridge, are connected yet discreet, with rooms that open into uninterrupted valley views. Interiors reject uniformity — antique furniture, layered textiles, and art pieces coexist in what owner Isla Van Damme calls “masala architecture”: a lived-in blend of Mughal, European, and Bohemian influences shaped over time rather than designed in one stroke. 👉🏻 Meeting Isla (often called Loulou) clarifies everything. Belgian-raised, but tied deeply to Kodaikanal where she was born, she returned to this 40-acre coffee and pepper estate in 2016 to shape it into what it is now: less a hotel, more an extension of her personal world. Conversations with her felt like stepping into the same layered narrative that defines the space itself. 👉🏻 Life here moves through small, deliberate rhythms. Coffee sourced from nearby plantations, lemon cake from Isla’s own recipe, and meals built around what the land offers — from garden greens to local produce, anchor the experience. Outside, the ridge holds its own quiet drama. An open-air pool doubles as a water source for wildlife, with birds constantly moving through the trees.
