Recently, India celebrated the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima (Vesak) on 5th May. It’s a day that marks the day of Gautama Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing away, and is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Vesakha. Meanwhile, in Bhutan, this special day is known as Buddha Parinirvana. 👉🏻 Bhutan is home to countless Buddha statues, many of which are centuries old, venerated as sacred relics. This means that, in a city with a mere 100,000 inhabitants, there are more Buddhas than people. However, of all the statues, the Buddha Dordenma in Thimphu, Bhutan stands out with an extra-special feature — it houses 125,000 miniature Buddhas inside it. 👉🏻 Perched atop a hill in Thimphu, stands this colossal golden Buddha over a meditation hall. But there's so much more to this structure than meets the eye. What many don't know is that they're not just looking at one Buddha; they're looking at 125,000 of them. 👉🏻 Within the enormous bronze chest of the 169-foot Buddha Dordenma statue in Thimphu, each of these 125,000 miniature Buddhas stands between 8 to 12 inches tall.
