Nestled beside the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, you'll find a serene pond on one side and the majestic Kuthiramalika Palace on the other. This palace, also known as the mansion of horses, boasts 122 wooden horses intricately carved into the wall brackets that support the southern roof. Trust me, you won't be able to overlook this stunning sight while visiting the temple. 👉🏻 This grandiose 2-storey palace was built in the 1840s by none other than Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma, the illustrious Maharaja of the Kingdom of Travancore in British India. This opulent abode, also known as the New Mansion, is a true testament to the Maharaja's impeccable taste and unwavering commitment to luxury. 👉🏻 It is also a shining example of the Kerala school of architecture, complete with its signature sloping roofs, overhanging eaves, pillared verandahs, and enclosed courtyards craft from teakwood, rosewood, marble, and granite. A true testament to the grandeur of the 1840s, preserved with the utmost care. 👉🏻 As we made our way, Pragith from Hyatt Regency regaled me with a fascinating tidbit. The legendary musical composer Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma gazed upon the majestic Sree Padmanaswamy temple every morning for inspiration for his compositions. After Swathi Thirunal's passing in 1846, the building remained uninhabited for over a century. What a shame that such a storied abode was left to languish in obscurity for so long! 👉🏻 A mere fraction of the illustrious Kuthiramalika has been transformed into a Palace Museum, showcasing the opulent belongings of the esteemed Travancore Royal Family. Only a measly 20 out of the grand palace's 80 rooms are open for your perusal. 👉🏻 You’ll be awestruck as you lay your eyes on white marble idols and sculptures, Kathakali figures, Belgian mirrors, paintings and two royal thrones - one crafted from 24 elephant tusks (Dantasimhasana) and the other made of Bohemian crystal, adorned with the Travancore emblem conch atop the backrest. It's like stepping into a world of royalty where history and art come to life before your very eyes. #Kuthiramalika #dekhoapnadesh #travelwithkrazybutterfly #godsowncountry #keralatourism
