Amid the rugged landscapes of Armenia, nestled in the village of Garni, stands a poignant relic of a bygone era. As you venture closer to the Garni Temple, you'll be whisked away to the realm of ancient Greece. This architectural gem is the sole surviving Greco-Roman collonaded building in Armenia and the former Soviet Union that stands as a testament to the nation's pre-Christian heritage. 👉🏻 Built by King Tiridates I in the first century AD as a homage to the sun god Mihr, the Garni Temple stands as a beacon of Greek architectural splendour. However, unlike its counterparts in Greece, this structure is crafted from basalt instead of marble, and is devoid of mortar. Following Armenia's embrace of Christianity in the early 4th century, the Garni Temple became a royal summer residence for Khosrovidukht, the sister of Tiridates III. 👉🏻 Perched atop an elevated podium, the temple has a wide stairway with 9 steps gracefully ascending the northern side, leading to the temple's inner chamber. The temple's structure is secured by iron and bronze clamps. It comprises a portico (pronaos), a sanctuary (naos), and a surrounding colonnade supported by a total of 24 imposing columns of the Ionic order: 6 at the front and back, and 8 on each side. 👉🏻 Crowning the temple's façade, the triangular pediment is adorned with sculptures of plants and geometrical figures. Flanking the grand stairway on either side are sturdy square pedestals, adding to the temple's imposing presence. The front cornice boasts a series of sculpted lion heads, their fierce gazes adding a touch of grandeur to the structure. 👉🏻 The temple's inner chamber, or cella, can accommodate no more than 20 people, a relatively small size that has led some scholars to propose that the temple was primarily used for outdoor ceremonies, with a statue of the sun god Mihr placed within the cella. As you depart from the Garni Temple, its grandeur and historical significance will linger in your mind. This architectural gem is a must-visit for anyone seeking to delve into the heart of Armenia's fascinating past. #garnitemple #garnitemplearmenia #armenia #thehiddentrack #travelwithkrazybutterfly
