Gobindgarh Fort is an iconic military fortress located right in the middle of the bustling city of Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab. I was incredibly fortunate to be here to experience two nights of spiritual bliss in Amritsar on the 25th and 26th of March. 👉🏻 Gobindgarh Fort was originally known as the 'Bhangian da Killa' (fort of the Bhangis) after its 18th-century founder belonging to the Bhangi Misl of Dhillon Jats. 👉🏻 The historic fort, built with bricks and lime, had 25 cannons perched upon its ramparts and was held by the Bhangi rulers until 1805. But Maharaja Ranjit Singh renamed it in the early 19th century after the 10th Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh. 👉🏻 Over the course of the 19th century and until India's independence in 1947, the British army took charge and made innovative improvements to the fort to accommodate for the growing advancement in weaponry. Its square-shaped design features parapets at each corner and two doors, making it quite a formidable fortress. 👉🏻 The mighty Hari Singh Nalwa stands tall, his name etched into the Nalwa Gate - the main entrance to the fort - 25 cannons guard its ramparts. Unbeknownst to many, there's a secret tunnel that leads to far away Lahore, and its four bastions stand tall in a display of strength and courage. 👉🏻 But the most remarkable thing about the fort lies in the three bastions that are connected by a single rampart - a powerful symbol of unity and togetherness.
