#Byline For @nikkeiasia I write about Radio Ceylon, Asia’s first voice, as it nears its centenary milestone. https://asia.nikkei.com/Editor-s-Picks/Tea-Leaves/How-Radio-Ceylon-became-an-Asian-institution 👉🏻 In the early 1980s, the buzz of new movie releases reverberated through the streets atop horse-drawn carriages. A local announcer, adept at mimicking the iconic Ameen Sayani, the radio luminary of that era, would project through a handheld megaphone, ‘Bhaiyo aur Beheno aab aap dekh sakte hain’, preceding the announcement of the movie and the name of the theatre. Reminiscing about those days, my mother, fondly recalls Sayani as a voice stylist, noting that back then, everyone aspired to emulate his distinct style of speech. 👉🏻 My dad too recalls a cherished memory of Radio Ceylon during the late 1960s, “In those days, Binaca Geetmala was a weekly radio program that counted down Hindi film songs based on their popularity. Every Wednesday, from 8 to 9 pm on 25 AM, amidst intermittent reception, they aired 16 songs. The songs were termed a ‘Paidan’ in Hindi.” He adds, “The ultimate, most popular song was dubbed the ‘Sartaj’ (leader), and after reigning for 18 weeks, it was gracefully retired from Radio Ceylon. 👉🏻 Before announcing the ‘Sartaj,’ a trumpet tune from the Gypsy Spanish Dance song would play. Everyone used to bet on the ‘Sartaj’ songs back then, sparking a spirited competition among music directors vying for the top spot. Op Nayar, SD Burman, and Jaishankar were among the most fiercely competitive music directors of that era.” Following the recent passing of Ameen Sayani, a name synonymous with Radio Ceylon, we are once again prompted to reflect on the pivotal role of radio in the continent’s history. #radioceylon #srilankabroadcastingcorporation #travelwithkrazybutterfly #radiobroadcast
