In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic froze global travel, Airbnb faced an impossible reality. With demand plummeting, the company had to make tough decisions including laying off 25% of its workforce. 🏠𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀 But 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗻𝗯’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽. Instead of rushing layoffs as cold transactions, CEO Brian Chesky led with heart: ✅ Offered 14 weeks severance pay plus extra based on employee tenure ✅ Allowed employees to keep their company laptops to support their job search ✅ Created a talent directory connecting laid-off employees with other companies hiring ✅ Provided personalized job placement support and resources Brian Chesky also wrote a transparent, heartfelt letter taking full responsibility and emphasizing that the company cared deeply for its people. 🧭 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 This approach didn’t just ease the pain of layoffs it preserved dignity and respect. Chesky demonstrated that leadership isn’t about avoiding hard decisions it’s about how you make them.
