While others retreat, leaders who put people before profits create cultures that not only survive but thrive. On September 11, 2001, a moment that shook the world and devastated the airline industry. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 After 9/11, air travel came to a near halt. Revenue dropped. 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 scrambled to stay afloat by 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀. 🔴 American Airlines 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 - 20,000+ employees 🔴 United Airlines 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 - 20,000 employees 🔴 US Airways 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 - 11,000 employees 🟢 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 - 𝟬 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀 But Southwest Airlines, under the 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗯 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗿, made a radically different choice: 👉 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲. 👉 Not a pilot. Not a cleaner. Not a single staff member. CEO Herb believed that loyalty isn’t just expected from employees it must be earned by standing by them, especially when it’s hard. “If you treat your employees like family, they will treat your company like it matters.” 𝗞𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼: ✅ 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, they are the core asset of the business. ✅ 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 once broken by panic-driven decisions.
