ADHD is so contradictory sometimes, and if you live with it, you’ll know exactly what I mean. I want people to guide me. Tell me what to do, give me structure, help me figure things out. It genuinely helps me function. But the second it sounds like I’m being told what to do, something in me resists it completely. And I know how that sounds. It sounds like I’m being difficult or inconsistent. But it’s not about rejecting help, it’s about how ADHD brains are highly sensitive to perceived control and pressure. When it feels like a suggestion or shared direction, my brain can engage with it. It feels collaborative, and I can act on it. But when it feels like instruction or demand, even if it’s the exact same task, my brain can shut down or push back without me meaning to. That’s the part people don’t see. It’s not stubbornness. It’s not lack of willingness. It’s a nervous system response to how something is communicated. ADHD isn’t just about focus, it’s also about motivation, autonomy, and emotional response to perceived demands. The delivery of something can completely change whether it feels doable or overwhelming. So if you’ve ever wanted support but struggled when it feels too direct or forceful, you’re not being difficult. You’re navigating a brain that responds strongly to how control is perceived. If this felt a little too relatable, you’re definitely not alone.
