What looks like procrastination from the outside is often something very different for someone with ADHD. It isn’t usually a conscious decision to delay things or a lack of understanding about what needs to be done. In many cases, the intention is already there. The task is known, planned, and fully understood. But the difficulty happens at the point of starting. From the outside, it can look simple: just begin, just do the thing. But internally, there can be a sense of resistance or “stuckness” where the brain struggles to initiate the first step, even when there is full awareness and willingness. This is where executive dysfunction plays a role. It affects how effectively intention is translated into action. So even when everything is understood logically, the ability to start doesn’t always follow in a predictable way. From the outside, only the delay is visible. From the inside, there can be a sense of mental heaviness, overwhelm, or even a kind of freeze response where starting feels blocked. The longer it continues, the more overwhelming it can become, not less. What may be labelled as procrastination is often closer to paralysis. Not avoidance, but difficulty with initiation. And that difference matters, because it changes how the behaviour is understood. It shifts it away from judgement and towards a more accurate understanding of how ADHD actually affects day-to-day functioning.
