What looks like “laziness” from the outside is often something completely different on the inside. With ADHD, it’s not about not knowing what needs to be done, or not caring enough to start. In most cases, there’s full awareness of the task, even active thinking about it, planning it, and mentally preparing for it. The intention is already there. But between intention and action, something gets stuck. It can feel like a kind of invisible barrier where the brain understands what needs to happen, but the body doesn’t follow through. No matter how much internal pressure builds, starting the task doesn’t happen easily. It’s not resistance in the usual sense, it’s more like a disconnect in initiation. And the longer it continues, the heavier it feels. What begins as a simple task starts accumulating emotion, frustration, self-criticism, and guilt. It becomes less about the task itself and more about the internal experience of not being able to begin it. From the outside, only the delay is visible. The missed deadline, the unfinished work, the lack of action. But the internal effort, the thinking, the trying, the repeated attempts to start, isn’t seen. This is what executive dysfunction often looks like in ADHD. Not a lack of care, not a lack of effort, but difficulty translating intention into action in real time. And that gap is often misunderstood as laziness, when in reality it’s something much more complex.
