ADHD is so contradictory sometimes, and if you live with it, you’ll know exactly what I mean. I love spontaneity when it’s my idea. Completely fine, exciting even. I feel energised by it. But spontaneity from other people? Suddenly it feels chaotic, unpredictable, and like I’ve lost all sense of control over my own time. And I know how that sounds. It sounds controlling, maybe even rigid. But it’s not about resisting change, it’s about how an ADHD brain needs a sense of agency to regulate it. When I choose the spontaneity, my brain feels prepared for it. It feels safe, even exciting, because I’ve already mentally adapted to it. But when it comes from outside, especially without warning, my brain doesn’t get time to adjust, so it can feel overwhelming instead of fun. That’s the part people don’t see. It’s not about not liking fun or excitement. It’s about the nervous system reacting differently depending on whether something feels internally initiated or externally imposed. ADHD isn’t just about attention, it’s also about regulation, control, and predictability. It’s a constant balancing act between excitement and overwhelm, and sometimes the source of the change makes all the difference. So if you’ve ever felt excited by plans you made, but overwhelmed by plans other people make for you, you’re not being difficult. You’re navigating a brain that processes control and spontaneity differently. If this felt a little too relatable, you’re definitely not alone.
