For many people with ADHD, reassurance isn’t about reassurance in the “nice to have” sense, it is often what helps balance an internal system that is constantly self-evaluating. Even when things are going well externally, it doesn’t always translate internally in the same way. There can be a strong focus on what could have been improved, done faster, or handled differently, even in situations that objectively went fine. This creates a disconnect between logic and feeling. On a logical level, there may be awareness that effort was made and expectations were met. But emotionally, the experience can still feel like falling short. Small moments can also linger longer than expected. A slightly delayed reply, a small mistake, or a moment of uncertainty can get replayed and analysed repeatedly, often growing in significance over time. Over time, this can build a background narrative of not being enough, even when that is not reflected in reality or in outcomes. Reassurance, in this context, helps interrupt that loop. It doesn’t erase accountability or effort, it simply helps recalibrate perception back to what is actually happening, rather than what the mind is amplifying in the moment. It is less about needing constant validation, and more about having something steady to balance an internal tendency towards overanalysis and self-criticism.
