No one really tells you this, but learning to accept your emotions is part of unlearning years of masking. Because a lot of ADHDers did not grow up being taught that their emotions made sense. We were told we were too sensitive. Too emotional. Too dramatic. Too much. So we adapted. We became quieter. Easier. More controlled. We learned how to soften our reactions, hold things in, and make ourselves easier for other people to handle. And from the outside, that probably looked like maturity. But internally, the emotions never actually disappeared. They were just hidden, filtered, managed. That is what masking often is. Not pretending to be someone else completely, but constantly editing your natural reactions so you feel more acceptable to the people around you. But ADHD brains do not feel less. If anything, they often feel more intensely. So when emotions are constantly suppressed instead of understood, it builds into overwhelm, burnout, shame, and eventually feeling disconnected from yourself. And then, for many people, there comes a point where you realise the emotions were never the problem. They are part of why you care deeply. Why you love deeply. Why you notice things. Why you fight for people. Why empathy comes so naturally to you. That intensity is not weakness. It just needed understanding instead of shame. And maybe healing is not becoming less emotional. Maybe it is learning that your emotions were never something you had to apologise for in the first place.
