Some of the most important things about ADHD are also the ones people rarely get told early enough. A lot of late diagnosed ADHDers grow up internalising stories that don’t actually reflect what was going on. Things get misread as personality, effort, or “just how you are,” when there’s often a much deeper explanation underneath. What looks like inconsistency in friendships is often executive dysfunction, overwhelm, or forgetfulness rather than lack of care. What looks like high achievement is often years of overcompensating, masking, and pushing through exhaustion to keep up. And what gets labelled as “too capable to have ADHD” is often exactly why it was missed in the first place. Late diagnosis often brings a strange mix of clarity and grief. Clarity, because things finally start to make sense. And grief, for all the ways it was misunderstood before that point. If this resonates, you’re not alone in reinterpreting your past through a different lens.
