There’s a difference between awareness and understanding, and for a lot of people with ADHD, that gap is felt every day. When ADHD gets minimised to “it’s not that serious” or “everyone struggles sometimes,” it can feel like the reality of living with it is being overlooked. Because the difficult parts aren’t just occasional or small, they’re consistent, layered, and often invisible to other people. Rejection sensitivity can turn a small shift in tone into something that feels deeply personal. Not by choice, but because the brain processes it that way. Exhaustion isn’t just physical, it’s mental, emotional, and constant, like the mind never fully switches off. Emotions can feel intense and immediate, even when you know they don’t match the situation, and that disconnect can be frustrating in itself. And then there’s the everyday overwhelm. The build-up of small tasks, the pressure to keep up, the guilt when things slip, even with people you genuinely care about. None of this is about being dramatic or making things bigger than they are. It’s about a nervous system that experiences things differently, more intensely, and often without an “off switch.” Understanding doesn’t always require having the same experience. Sometimes it just starts with believing someone when they tell you how it feels.
