ADHD is so contradictory sometimes, and if you live with it, you’ll know exactly what I mean. I crave stimulation, but the second there’s too much stimulation I need everyone to stop existing immediately. And I know how that sounds. It sounds like I can’t handle normal sensory input or that I’m being dramatic. But it’s not about liking or disliking stimulation, it’s about how an ADHD brain regulates sensory input in real time. When I’m understimulated, everything feels flat, boring, and like my brain is searching for something to latch onto. But when it tips into overstimulation, the same input that felt fine a minute ago can suddenly feel loud, intense, and unbearable. That’s the part people don’t see. It’s not a simple preference. It’s a nervous system constantly trying to find the middle point between too little and too much, and sometimes it overshoots in either direction very quickly. ADHD isn’t just about attention, it’s also about sensory processing and regulation. The brain doesn’t always hold a stable “comfortable level,” so the shift between boredom and overwhelm can feel instant and extreme. So if you’ve ever gone from craving noise, movement, or stimulation to needing everything to go quiet all at once, you’re not being inconsistent. You’re navigating a brain that processes sensory input in waves. If this felt a little too relatable, you’re definitely not alone.
