For many people with ADHD, empathy often shows up through connection, not separation. When someone shares something personal, the brain may naturally search for a similar experience from within your own life. Not as a way of shifting focus, but as a way of understanding. It becomes a reference point that helps make emotions feel more tangible and relatable. From the outside, this can sometimes be misread as making it about yourself. But internally, it is usually an attempt to say “I understand” using shared experience as a bridge. Immediate comforting responses or perfectly formed reassurance don’t always come instinctively. Instead, relating a situation back to something familiar can feel like the most natural way to process and respond in real time. It is not about competing with someone’s experience, it is about trying to sit alongside it in a way that feels real and grounded. And while not everyone expresses empathy in this way, for many ADHDers, connection is built through recognition, through finding emotional overlap that helps make sense of what someone else is feeling.
