For ADHD brains, time isn’t always experienced in a linear or precise way, especially when it’s vague. So when someone says “can you come after lunch?”, it might not immediately translate into a clear plan. It can sit in the mind as something like “later,” rather than a specific, actionable time. That’s not about ignoring or misunderstanding intention, it’s about how time blindness and working memory affect how information is processed and stored. Without a clear anchor, it doesn’t always become something the brain can reliably organise around. Different interpretations of time, like 12:30, 1pm, or 2pm, don’t always feel automatically distinct in the moment unless they’re clearly defined. So the plan can stay slightly “unfixed,” which makes it easier to lose track of or overthink later. This is why clarity matters so much. Not complexity, just specificity. A clear time turns something abstract into something actionable, which reduces the mental load of trying to interpret and remember it correctly. When expectations are clear, there’s less space for overthinking, uncertainty, or anxiety about getting it wrong.
