Not replying doesn’t always mean not caring. For ADHD brains, replying to a message isn’t just a “quick task.” It involves timing, attention, memory, and the ability to switch focus at the right moment. If any of those don’t line up, even something important can slip through. There’s often an intention–action gap. You’ve read it, thought about it, maybe even mentally replied… but the step of actually sending it gets lost. Not because it didn’t matter, but because your brain moved on before the action happened. Delaying a reply can also add pressure. The longer it sits, the bigger it feels, which can turn a simple message into something that feels overwhelming to come back to. And then comes the guilt. Knowing how it might be perceived, even when the intention was always there. This is what executive dysfunction can look like in real life. Not a lack of care, but difficulty with follow-through in the moment. If you relate to this, you’re not the only one.
