There was no pre-wedding celebration, no glamorous wedding, and no expensive gold jewellery or sari. I wore some pearls from my mother's collection and a simple pure silk sari that I had bought her with my first salary two years prior. We simply registered our marriage at the registrar's office, surrounded by people we still call friends. Today marks 16 years since that day. As we've matured over the years, we've outdone each other with incredibly strange gifts. From studio lights and a mirrorless camera to a shocking blue dress, a pressure cooker, and an elephant-embossed ring, I've received 15 sets of unusual presents. And what did I give? Absurd shoes, non-alcoholic gin (he was devastated), and all sorts of other oddities. However, one thing has remained constant: good books for both of us every year. This year, he surpassed himself based on my request: a high-end roti maker, especially with the current LPG situation. Even Pasta was shocked to see it, but I did ask for it. Yes, with all of this, it has been 16 years since we got married. People often ask why we got married in the month of Chaitra, as it's an unusual time for weddings. Was it an act of defiance? The truth is, that was simply the date given by the marriage registrar, and it was the only week we could both get time off from work. I was living in Bihar at the time, and Mehebub was in Delhi. So, neither the date nor the marriage itself was rebellious; it was simply a choice we made. :)
