▪︎4 days of annual festival of Odisha is back again which falls in mid June i.e RAJA (pronounced as Ra-Jaw). ▪︎The rainy weather has created the perfect vibes for the festival (Pura Raja Paga). This joyous festival is also observed to celebrate the advent of monsoon. ▪︎As a kid & a single male child I had less understanding about this festival, it used to be my school summer vacations & time to visit Aja ghara (Maternal grandparents home). ▪︎Me & cousin sister used to arrive my grandparents home at same time. She used to get all the attention for all these 4 days & I took her out for the rope-swing tied on trees in the neighborhood. ▪︎This unique festival is dedicated to womanhood & celebrated by everyone but I always felt it's a "Festival of Pitha's". For me Raja is equivalent to Food in general. My love for Odia pithas started due to my Ai (maternal grandmother) who used to make pithas during this festival for us. ▪︎During these 3 days girls are not allowed to work & wear new cloths, alata, ornaments. ▪︎According to hindu mythology it is believed that the mother Goddess Earth or the divine wife of Lord Vishnu undergoes menstruation during the first 3 days. ▪︎Today is SAJABAJA or preparatory day during which the house, kitchen including grinding stones are cleaned, spices are ground for 3 days. ●1st day is called PAHILI RAJA, ●2nd day is MITHUNA/RAJA SANKRANTI, ●3rd day is BHU DAAHA/ BASI RAJA. ●The final 4th day is called VASUMATI SHANA, in which the ladies bath the grinding stone as a symbol of Bhumi with turmeric paste. ▪︎This in general about the festival for friends who aren't from Odisha & in coming 3 days Instagram will be flooded with posts related to Raja by the Odia community. PS: AMBUBACHI MELA is a similar annual Hindu mela held at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam. It is the celebration of the yearly menstruation course of goddess Kamakhya for 3 days. #pithasofraja #rajapitha #menstrualfestival #foodreel #sajabaja #rajaw #monsoonfestival #festivalsofindia #ambubachimela #assamtourism #kamakhyatemple #hindufestival #khiramanda #odishatourismofficial #bhukadinsantales #odiacuisine #pithasofodisha #pithapana #foodvideo
