
Scientifically known as Butea monosperma. Commonly known as Palash, tesu. The plant grows as a medium-sized tree and is a native to India. They flower from January to March, the tree is laden with orange-vermillion flowers, which also lend it the most famous name'The Tree of the Flame'. Palash is abundantly available in central, eastern & also other parts of the country. The flower is once used in making dyes for Holi but introduction of chemical colours in market put an end to its use. Tribal areas of Maharashtra and adjoining Chhattisgarh, however, once valued palash as the best coolant, with nutritional and healing qualities. While in most areas the tradition of consuming the extract of the flower has died out, it is surviving in small pockets. During summer, cold infusion of the dried flower is consumed as sherbet, while a tea prepared with dried flower can be consumed all year long. Ingredients: Fresh/Dry Palash flowers A large handful rock sugar: To taste Fennel seeds Method: Soak all the ingredients with 4 glasses of water for 3 to 4 hours or till the flowers lose colour. Stir well, strain and serve chilled. Benefits: Palash flowers is considered anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anthelmintic, anti-diabetic, diuretic, analgesic, antitumor and astringent.
