Today in the Eastern part of the India, particularly in Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar, is celebrated as "SARASWATI PUJA/BASANT PANCHAMI". Also known as 'SRI PANCHAMI' in southern states. ▪︎It is believed to be the day when Goddess Saraswati was born. As She is the Goddess of knowledge, music and arts, students seek her blessings on this day. ▪︎It is celebrated during 'Shukla Paksha' or the Full Moon fortnight in the month of Magha of the Hindu calendar. ▪︎If I recall back, this day is a big day for schools and colleges. On the auspicious day, students (devotees) place their books & other study material on the feet of the idol to seek her blessings after taking a bath and wearing new clothes. Observing a partial fasting till puspanjali( offering flowers) & relishing chuda ghasa, some vegetarian dishes after that. ▪︎In Odisha usually, toddlers are introduced to alphabets (learning) from this day in a unique ceremony named as 'KHADI-CHUAN' which means touching Chalk on Slate /VIDYA-ARAMBHA (Start of learning). ▪︎Let me confess one thing that I can speak Odia fluently but I can't read & write my Mother tongue properly. But I promise myself that I will improvise my Odia learning skills. ▪︎Another common ritual i.e followed in Eastern India(Odisha & West Bengal) is eating their 1st Jujube/Ber fruit on the day of Saraswati Puja. Nowadays no one follows this because of easy & early availability of Ber in the market. ▪︎In fact, eating Ber fruit before Saraswati Puja is considered as inauspicious and is refrained from. The 1st & fresh harvest of Ber comes in around the same time of the spring season. ▪︎Goddess Saraswati and several other deities like Lord Shiva are said to be very fond of this fruit. Hence Ber is offered to the goddess 1st in the puja & later eaten as prasad. ▪︎If we review the festivals in India most of them are harvesting celebration of the seasonal produce. Logically eating Ber fruit is avoided before Saraswati Puja because consumption of Ber might lead to cough & cold in the winter season. #basantpanchami2025 #saraswatipuja #springfestival
