Today is the Thursday of Manabasa Gurubar. Thanks to Laxmi of every home (Mother/Sister/Wife)for making us a better person in life. This is gesture to say thanks to my mother & to make her feel special. People in Odisha worship Goddess Laxmi on Manabasa Gurubar (Thursday) during the lunar month of Margasira according to Odia Calender. ▪︎This month & occasion is correlated with cultivation & freshly harvested paddy & vegetables. ▪︎Farming is the main profession of people staying in countryside. They consider it as the grace & blessing of Goddess Laxmi and worship (Mana) filled with freshly harvested paddy as her icon. MANA is a pot made of bamboo canes used in the olden days for measuring paddy & BASA means establishing the 'mana' in the worshiping place. ▪︎It is believed that Goddess Laxmi visits every house during Manabasa and therefore, the female members perform this puja with devotion. ▪As per mythology Manabasa is based on the ancient scripture Laxmi Puran(Holy Book) written by great poet of Odia Literature in 15th Century by Balarama Dasa. ▪︎In ancient times, the lower castes were treated as untouchables & were not allowed to pray, worship & do rituals to God inside the temple. But Shriya, a low caste woman, dared to pray, worship & appease the Goddess Laxmi, who then visits her. ▪︎Balaram, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath got annoyed by this act of Laxmi & he commanded Lord Jagannath to leave his wife Laxmi. ▪︎She left Jagannath Temple, Puri after a lots of confrontation and arguments with her husband. ▪︎While leaving the temple, she curses her husband and elder brother-in-law saying that they would have to go through a prolonged ordeal without food, water & shelter. ▪︎The curse of Laxmi has a severe impact on both the brothers for 12 years and they had a tough time. Soon they realise her importance and Laxmi agrees to return back temple but on one condition that there will be no discrimination of caste and creed. ▪︎The whole story stresses on the importance of feminism way back and empowers the women to resist man dominance.
