We often break the very thing we are trying to build. As parents, our brain is wired to fix things. We see a smudge on a drawing and want to erase it. We see an A minus and want to push for the A. We think we are helping. We think we are giving them a head start. But every time we improve their work, we are also saying something they hear loud and clear. Your best is not good enough. Over time, the child stops trying anything new. Because trying means failing. And failing means hearing it again. This is how a child stops being curious and starts being careful. A few things that change this at home. The 5-minute rule. When your child shows you something they made, just look at it for five minutes. No suggestions. No fixes. Just look. Describe, do not judge. Instead of “that is so pretty”, try “I see you used a lot of blue in this corner.” It tells them you actually saw what they did. Cheer for the almost. A wrong answer that took effort is worth more than a right answer that came easy. Say so out loud. The goal is not to raise a child who never fails. The goal is to raise a child who is not afraid to.
