“You’re okay” sounds harmless. Your child’s nervous system reads it differently. What you mean: please be okay, I don’t know what to do with this. What they hear: my big feeling is too much for the person I love most. So they make it smaller. Then quieter. Then invisible. Years later, they become the adult who says “I’m fine” while falling apart. The one who can’t cry even when they need to. “I’m right here” does the opposite.
