That “selective hearing” your child has? It’s not attitude. It’s actually how their brain works. 🧠 You know this moment. You call them for dinner. They’re deep in a puzzle or a block tower. Nothing. No response. Like you don’t exist. Here’s the thing though. Their brain isn’t ignoring you. It’s just built differently right now. The part of the brain that helps us switch between tasks, like going from playing to listening, is still growing in kids. It won’t fully develop until their mid-20s. So when they’re “in the zone,” they are genuinely, deeply focused. That’s actually a good thing. The shift that changed everything for me and for thousands of families I’ve worked with: Stop calling from across the room. Walk over. Get down to their level. Make eye contact. Then talk. Connect first. Then redirect. It’s a small change. But it works because it works with how their brain is built, not against it. Which part surprised you more? That deep focus is healthy for children, or that their brain genuinely can’t switch gears as fast as ours?
