***Ship Happens! Mandvi Flexing on History*** In my latest piece for Forbes India, I delve into the rich maritime heritage of Mandvi, a historic port town in Gujarat where the centuries-old art of wooden shipbuilding still thrives. 👉🏻 In 1580, Rao Khengarji built the Mandvi port, where merchants gathered at the fort’s bastion, “Hodiyo Kotho” to watch for ships from Ceylon, Arabia, Africa, and the Malabar coast. By the 18th century, a flag by day and an oil lamp by night signalled incoming vessels. 👉🏻 Mandvi was once a bustling port, where local Muslim craftsmen and the Kharwas built wooden ships. About 35 years ago, the Kharwas stopped, and Haji and Pattaseth took over, mastering the craft, securing loans, and emerging as new industry leaders. 👉🏻 Mandvi continues its wooden shipbuilding tradition despite the rise of steel ships. The old port, now more of a workshop, mainly stores bananas. Only four to five wooden ships are built every two years. 👉🏻 The smallest, weigh around 2.5 tons, whereas the big ones—the heartbeater, are massive, ranging from 1,500 to 2,800 tons. And the absolute largest ones are 3,200 to 3,500 tons. 👉🏻 But Mandvi has more to offer than just its seafaring legacy—it’s also the birthplace of Dabeli, a local snack that, trust me, is the most flavorful version I’ve ever tried! While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to visit the Vijay Vilas Palace, made famous by Bollywood classics like *Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam* and *Lagaan*.
