As my trip to Woods at Sasan drew to a close, I indulged in a Shiroabhyanga Ayurvedic massage, a perfect finale to my retreat. Shiroabhyanga, I learned, is more than just a massage; it’s an ancient practice steeped in Ayurvedic wisdom. The term “Shiro” refers to the head, while “Abhyanga” suggests “massaging the body’s limbs” or “glowing body” in Sanskrit. It’s a combination of Shirodhara + Abhyanga 🍃 👉🏻 As I lay back, eyes closed, the gentle head massage began to ease me into a state of relaxation. “Shiro” means head and “Dhara” means flow, hinting at what came next—a warm, soothing stream of herbal oil poured onto my forehead, right over the “third eye.” This treatment, I was told, is designed to calm the mind, promote deep relaxation, and sharpen mental clarity. It felt like a gentle reset for my nervous system, a powerful Ayurvedic therapy for balancing body, mind, and spirit. 👉🏻 Abhyanga, a traditional Ayurvedic full-body massage, comes from the Sanskrit words “Abhi,” meaning “to rub” or “towards,” and “Anga,” meaning “limbs” or “body.” This practice is a sacred ritual in Ayurveda, designed to bring balance to body and mind. The therapist massaged my body with the warm herbal oils, chosen specifically for my dosha, or body type. 👉🏻 With each stroke, it was as though my body energies—or doshas, as they are known in Ayurveda—were being gently balanced. It was a profoundly soothing experience, one that not only improved my circulation and relieved stress but left me with a lasting sense of inner calm. As the treatment continued, I felt my body begin to detoxify, my nervous system calming with each stroke. My joints felt more flexible, my mind clearer. Shiroabhyanga, I realised, is more than just a massage; it is a practice of self-care that Ayurveda recommends for daily well-being. #shiroabhyanga #woodsatsasan #sasangir #ayurvedictreatment #ayurvedictherapy #ayurvedalifestyle #somwellness #travelwithkrazybutterfly
