India's population may face a long-term decline as the country's fertility rate has fallen to a record low of 1.9 births per woman, below the replacement level of 2.1 needed to maintain population stability. Reacting to the development, Elon Musk expressed concern over the global decline in birth rates, warning that aging populations, shrinking workforces, and falling birth rates could create serious challenges for the future. Recent government data shows a major demographic shift in India. Fertility rates in urban areas have dropped to around 1.5, while states such as Delhi, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu have seen even lower numbers. Delhi's fertility rate is estimated at just 1.2. Although states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh remain above the replacement level, their rates are also declining. Experts say the trend is driven by higher education levels, urbanization, rising living costs, and changing attitudes toward marriage and family size. While lower birth rates can reduce pressure on resources and infrastructure, they may also lead to fewer young workers supporting a growing elderly population, creating challenges for healthcare, pensions, and economic growth. Demographers believe India's population could stabilize at around 1.8–1.9 billion by 2080 before beginning to decline if current trends continue. As a result, some policymakers are considering incentives to encourage larger families, marking a shift from past population-control policies to concerns about future underpopulation. @thetrid.ent
